Search and rescue crews hope flares dropped from aircraft in the Parry Sound and Sudbury South areas, will help locate a missing plane.

The Piper aircraft left Sudbury yesterday afternoon with three people onboard, but shortly into the flight the pilot reported engine trouble, then lost radio contact.

The last known position was 20-kilometres south of Sudbury and 18-kilometres west of Key River.

Crews from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Trenton began searching shortly after the aircraft was reported missing and continued the efforts this morning.

Few details are known about who was onboard the missing aircraft or who the plane belongs to.

It’s believed the Piper -which is a single engine non-float plane- was bound for North Carolina.
