Up to $8-million could be spent on changing city street lights to LED bulbs across Greater Sudbury.

Sudbury City Council approved the streetlight retrofit program last night and will now search for the best business plan.

Mayor Brian Bigger says switching to LED lighting will be helpful, since it will mean a reduction in energy use and less maintenance work on street lights.

He says the final cost could be lower than $8-million, maybe closer to $5-million, but council must give its approval if more money is spent.

A design study will evaluate the best use of LED lights and could reveal some locations where that particular bulb may not be effective.
