The Sudbury and District Health Unit has a plan in place when marijuana becomes legal in Canada.

The federal government has set a spring 2017 deadline for introducing new laws and the health unit is going to approach the drug much like alcohol and tobacco.

Public Health Nurse, Brenda Stankiewiez says the health unit got a head start by passing a motion back in November when the Trudeau government was elected.

Stankiewiez says they look forward to being able to analyzing the effect the drug has since its illegal now and can’t be studied the same as tobacco or alcohol.

She hopes a plan is laid out where it is out of the reach of the youth and there is a reduced risk to the public.
