Day of Mourning

By Stew Kernan

Workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness on the job recognized during the Day of Mourning.

Sudbury was the first in Canada to declare April 28th as the official Day of Mourning 32 years ago…and now it’s marked around the world.

Two events were held in Sudbury….The Labour Council held a ceremony at Laurentian University with the day marked at the Steelworkers Hall.

The International President of the United Steelworkers, Leo Gerard says there has been a lot of improvement, but in Ontario one worker, on average dies every day while one-thousand die each year across the country.

Gerard says he’s pleased to see Local 6500 and Vale work together on a study on mental wellness in the workplace.
