Greater Sudbury Police were out at St. Charles College to kick off Police Week 2016.

The week coincides with Peace Officers Memorial Day which is celebrated across North America every year on May 15th and has been in place since 1970.

Police Chief Paul Pedersen says this week is one of the best for police-youth interaction.

Pedersen also hopes it sparks an interest in pursuing a career with the police service.

For Student Success Teacher with St. Charles, Krystal Rewega, that is the goal, that her students take a potential career away from the week and build off the volunteer numbers the school currently has with GSPS.

Volunteer Coordinator Sherry Hasanefendic says they built the week to engage the youth and help them interact with officers.

Later in the week there will be a Joe MacDonald Football Day and an officers vs. teachers lip sync battle at Lockerby Composite School.
