The city has launched a mass notification system in the event of an emergency.

Sudbury Alerts was created in partnership with Vale, Glencore, Sudbury Police, Fire and others and will alert residents of imminent threats to public safety.

Sudbury CAO Ed Archer says this will tap into both traditional social media for alerts and the software was paid for by Vale.

Emergency Management Officer, Latoya McGaw says it’s the most effective way to keep the community informed during an emergency.

Chief of Fire and Paramedic Services Trevor Bain says the alert could be anything from a hazardous release of materials to a train derailment.

The city has collected 69 thousand public home and business numbers through the public phone book, but encourages everyone to register their devices or email on the Greater Sudbury website.
