By 2020 Downtown Sudbury will start to form into an art district as city council picked the current arena site as the location for the future art gallery/library and convention and performance centre.

Council may have picked the site but the work has just begun.

The city’s director of economic development, Ian Wood says next steps are to create a business plan, operational plan, design and financial plan, with construction hopefully to start by 2020.

The project could change over time and Ward 3 Councillor Gerry Montpellier believes the Art Gallery and Library should be the only thing going on the site.

But the city’s director of economic development, Ian Wood and staff believe there is a business case for a convention centre and event centre in separate locations.

This is a big milestone for council as now the big four projects they deemed a priority all have a set location with the first project, Place Des Arts, set for construction this Spring.
