The next step in the lengthy journey to build the Kingsway Entertainment District was taken last night when city councillors voted 11-2 in favour of allowing a casino at the proposed location.

Only Mark Signoretti and Gerry Montpellier were against approving the official plan amendment.

Despite that green light — Sudbury.com says the next move will come out of Toronto where the province’s new Local Planning Appeals Tribunal will deal with the case.

Some councillors like Ward 5’s Robert Kirwan says he’s confident city staff and the consultant for Gateway have met all conditions required and the appeal will fail.

Ward 10 Councillor Fern Cormier says they were voting on a land use decision only and not whether a casino would be good or bad for the community.
