The 2020 Juno awards have been cancelled due to the coronavirus.

“We salute and appreciate all the 2020 nominees. CARAS will continue to explore options to coordinate an alternative way to honour this year’s JUNO Award winners and Special Award Recipients and support the creators and participants that so greatly benefit from the work done by CARAS and the JUNOS,” a spokesperson for the event said.

As the spread of the virus continues to grow, more events are taking similar precautions. The NBA announced Wednesday that it will be suspending play indefinitely. As well, a number of major festivals including SXSW and Coachella have been axed or postponed due to the virus.

The cancellation comes in the wake of Canada’s first confirmed death in B.C. this week. The show which was to feature a performance from Kingston rockers, The Glorious Sons was scheduled to take place at SaskTel Centre in Saksatoon on March 15.

There have now been over 100 confirmed cases of the virus in Canada with nearly 130,000 infected worldwide.
