There is a local connection to Tuesday’s Amtrak crash in Philadelphia.

Canadian executive of Wells Fargo, 55-year old Abid Gilani was among the seven victims killed in the train crash.

Gilani attended Laurentian University in Sudbury in the early 80’s, getting a Bachelor of Engineering.

He then moved on to the University of Saskatchewan for his MBA in finance.

During his career, before Wells Fargo, Gilani worked as a mining planning engineer for Noranda in Saskatoon.

He had been dividing his time at Wells Fargo between the company’s New York and Washington sites.

He leaves behind a wife and two children.

Both Gilani and his wife still have family in Ontario.

In the meantime, investigators say the train was speeding at double the limit when it rounded a curve and jumped the tracks.

Over 200 people were also injured, including eight critically.
